When we think of self-care for new moms, we often picture things like spa days, solo walks, or finally getting a full night of sleep. And while those things are wonderful, they’re not always realistic, or even what we truly need.

Sometimes, what we need most is connection, mental stimulation, and a sense of identity outside of motherhood.

For me, that’s where American Mahjong came in—and it completely changed things.

🀄 How it Started (And Why I Needed it)

I started playing American Mahjong in 2023, right around the time my child began spending five days a week at preschool. For the first time in a long time, I had a little space in my day that was just mine.

And like so many moms, I didn’t quite know what to do with that space at first. Should I be grocery shopping? Cleaning? Catching up on life?

Instead, I found myself sitting at a Mahjong lesson—and something clicked.

🧠 Mahjong Gave Me a Mental Reset

Motherhood, especially in the early years, can feel repetitive and all-consuming. Mahjong offered something completely different:

  • It required focus

  • It challenged my brain

  • It pulled me out of the mental loop of to-do lists and responsibilities

For a few hours, I wasn’t thinking about naps, meals, or schedules. I was thinking about tiles, patterns, and strategy.

And that shift felt so refreshing.

💛 It Gave Me Back a Piece of Myself

Before becoming a mom, you are a whole person… with interests, hobbies, and passions.

That part of you doesn’t disappear after having a baby… but it can get buried.

Mahjong helped me reconnect with:

  • My social side

  • My curiosity

  • My ability to just enjoy something for myself

It reminded me that I’m not just a mom… I’m still me!

🤝 It Built Real Community

One of the most unexpected (and meaningful) parts of Mahjong was the connections it created.

I met another mom through Mahjong, and that connection grew into something bigger—we now run our own lessons and events together.

What started as a simple game turned into:

  • A friendship

  • A creative outlet

  • A shared business

And that’s the kind of self-care that lasts far beyond a single moment.

🌿 Why Mahjong Works as Self-Care

Mahjong checks so many boxes that traditional “self-care” often misses:

1. It Gets You Out of the House

Sometimes the best reset is simply being in a different environment.

2. It’s Social (Without Being Draining)

You’re connecting with others, but there’s also a shared activity—so the pressure is low.

3. It Engages Your Brain

Instead of passively scrolling or zoning out, you’re actively thinking, strategizing, and learning.

4. It’s Consistent

Unlike one-off self-care moments, Mahjong can become a regular part of your routine—something you look forward to.

5. It’s Fun (Which Matters More Than We Admit)

Joy is not a luxury—it’s essential.

🧘‍♀️ Self-Care Doesn’t Have to Look a Certain Way

If bubble baths and yoga classes aren’t your thing, that doesn’t mean you’re doing self-care “wrong.”

Maybe for you, it looks like:

  • Mahjong

  • A book club

  • A workout class

  • Coffee with a friend

  • Or simply time alone doing something you enjoy

The goal is feeling like yourself again.

💬 Final Thoughts

Mahjong didn’t just become a hobby for me—it became a reset button, a community, and a creative outlet all in one. And most importantly, it reminded me that taking care of yourself isn’t selfish, it’s necessary! Because when you feel like yourself again, you show up differently for everything else, including your family.

If you’re a mom looking for something that’s fun, social, and mentally engaging, Mahjong might just be the self-care you didn’t know you needed.
